What a Bhutan trip looks like

Bhutan restricts tourism on purpose, and the daily fee is the mechanism. That makes it more expensive than its neighbours and much quieter, which is the trade being offered.

The standard circuit is three valleys (Paro, Thimphu and Punakha) joined by mountain roads with a pass between each. The drives are short in distance and long in time.

The Tiger’s Nest is the reason most people come, and it is a real climb: four to five hours up and back, with a steep staircase at the end. It goes near the end of the trip so you are acclimatised.

Paro Taktsang

The Tiger’s Nest, built in 1692 on a cliff face 900 metres above the valley. Four to five hours up and back.

Thimphu

The capital: Tashichho Dzong, the weekend market, and a city with no traffic lights in it.

Buddha Dordenma

A 51-metre bronze Buddha above Thimphu, with a hundred thousand smaller ones inside the base.

Punakha Dzong

The old winter capital’s fortress, at the confluence of two rivers, and the finest building in the country.

Dochula Pass

108 stupas on a ridge between Thimphu and Punakha, with the high Himalaya behind on a clear morning.

Punakha suspension bridge

One of the longest in Bhutan, strung high over the Po Chhu and swaying the whole way across.

Chele La Pass

The highest motorable pass in the country, above Paro, with prayer flags across the ridge.

Rinpung Dzong

Paro’s fortress-monastery above the river, with the national museum in the watchtower above it.

Phobjikha Valley

A glacial valley where black-necked cranes winter, with Gangtey monastery above it.

Kyichu Lhakhang

One of the oldest temples in Bhutan, seventh century, on the floor of the Paro valley.

Are the prices per person?+

We quote per person on twin sharing, and we quote per enquiry rather than publishing a rate. Prices move with your travel dates, the hotel category and availability on the day you book. A published number would be wrong for most people who read it.

Can I change the hotels or the number of nights?+

Yes. Tell us what you want changed (a cheaper hotel, one night less, a different city) and we revise the itinerary until it fits, then confirm the booking.

Is the visa included?+

No visa for Indian passport holders, but a permit is required and a daily Sustainable Development Fee applies. Confirm the current rate before booking. Visa fees are not included in the package unless the quote says so, and we confirm the current requirement for your passport and dates before you pay.

When is the best time to go?+

March to May and September to November. Travelling outside that window is usually cheaper, and we will tell you honestly what you would be trading away.
