About this trip
What a Leh trip looks like
Leh is at 11,500 feet and everything after it is higher. The first two days are acclimatisation and they are not optional. The itinerary keeps them light on purpose, because altitude sickness is what ruins these trips.
After that it is two overnight runs: north over Khardung La into the Nubra valley, and east to Pangong. Both are long driving days on high roads, and both are worth it.
Permits are required for all three areas and are arranged in advance. Flights in and out are weather-dependent in the shoulder months, so we build a buffer rather than booking a tight connection.

Where you actually go
Leh

Khardung La
One of the highest motorable passes in the world at 18,380 feet, on the road north to Nubra.
Nubra Valley
A cold desert beyond the pass: dunes at Hunder, and double-humped Bactrian camels on them.
Diskit Monastery
Above the Nubra valley, with a 32-metre Maitreya Buddha facing up the Shyok.
Pangong Lake
134 kilometres of blue at 14,000 feet, running across into Tibet, changing colour through the day.
Chang La
The pass on the road back from Pangong, at 17,350 feet, usually snowbound at the top.
Thiksey Monastery
A twelve-storey gompa stacked up a hill, often compared to the Potala, with a 15-metre Buddha inside.
Hemis Monastery
The largest in Ladakh, hidden in a side valley, and the site of the June masked-dance festival.
Magnetic Hill
The stretch of road where a stationary car appears to roll uphill, on the Srinagar highway.
Sangam
Where the green Indus and the brown Zanskar meet without mixing, below Nimmu.

Are the prices per person?+
We quote per person on twin sharing, and we quote per enquiry rather than publishing a rate. Prices move with your travel dates, the hotel category and availability on the day you book. A published number would be wrong for most people who read it.
Can I change the hotels or the number of nights?+
Yes. Tell us what you want changed (a cheaper hotel, one night less, a different city) and we revise the itinerary until it fits, then confirm the booking.
Is the visa included?+
No visa is needed. This is domestic travel. Where a permit is required, as in Ladakh or parts of the north-east, we arrange it with the booking.
When is the best time to go?+
May to September; most passes are shut through winter. Travelling outside that window is usually cheaper, and we will tell you honestly what you would be trading away.
What do you need to confirm the booking?+
