About this trip

What a Kashmir trip looks like

Srinagar is the base and the three day trips run out from it: Gulmarg for the meadow and the gondola, Pahalgam for the Lidder valley, Sonamarg for the glacier road. Each is a day out and back.

The houseboat night is the one thing to get right. A boat on the Dal itself rather than one moored on a side channel, and a shikara at dusk when the lake goes quiet.

It is a genuinely seasonal destination. Tulips in April, meadows through summer, and snow at Gulmarg from December: three different trips, and the road to Sonamarg can be shut in winter.

A meadow at 8,700 feet, with a gondola running higher in two stages to Apharwat.

The Lidder valley: Betaab and Aru beyond the town, and Chandanwari when the road is open.

Sonamarg

Sonamarg means golden meadow, and it is the last of the valley before the road climbs to Ladakh. The Thajiwas glacier sits above it.

Jahangir’s terraced Mughal garden above the lake, chinar-shaded, best in the last hour before it closes.

Nishat Bagh

The larger of the Mughal gardens, rising in twelve terraces with the Zabarwan hills behind.

A Shiva temple on a hill a thousand feet above Srinagar, and the best view of the valley.

A meadow ringed by pine and snow beyond Pahalgam, named after the film shot in it.

Are the prices per person?+

We quote per person on twin sharing, and we quote per enquiry rather than publishing a rate. Prices move with your travel dates, the hotel category and availability on the day you book. A published number would be wrong for most people who read it.

Can I change the hotels or the number of nights?+

Yes. Tell us what you want changed (a cheaper hotel, one night less, a different city) and we revise the itinerary until it fits, then confirm the booking.

Is the visa included?+

No visa is needed. This is domestic travel. Where a permit is required, as in Ladakh or parts of the north-east, we arrange it with the booking.

When is the best time to go?+

March to October; December to February for snow at Gulmarg. Travelling outside that window is usually cheaper, and we will tell you honestly what you would be trading away.

What do you need to confirm the booking?+
